[...] Katie McCarthy wrote a fantastic post today on “Australia focuses on premium wines”Here’s ONLY a quick extractMercer concludes that the Australian wine industry is beginning to focus on the premium end of the market – something which our Australian Wine Buyer David Berry Green predicted in Berrys
The pendulum seems to swing every year between excess and undersupply with the Australian wines. The actual business is still not vast in comparison to European vineyards….the total Australian vineyards are still half the size of the Languedoc Roussillon!
Although the Australians have been producing grapes for many years their industry as a global respected quality wine maker is relatively young. Focus on quality and forget the irrigated ‘price point’ wines that may sit at the end of an aisle in Asda. Make a name for ’boutique’ wines rather than volume ‘here today gone tomorrow’ brands.
The French and other European producers have been hit very hard by the recent exchange rate issues (as well as the Australians), so I am surprised to hear of better value from Europe.
