He was an impressive man. I have vague recollections of visiting the winery as a kid. My old man & his mates have enjoyed many bottles of the distinctive YY label over the years since. Me too. Earlier this year I visited him when the colour of whole Yarra Valley was at its most spectacular autumnal best. He had an extensive garden, complete with a prolifically fruiting persimmon tree by the cellar. A carefully draped net covered it, to keep the birds away. This was typical of his commitment to excellence.
We'd been to a few wineries earlier in the day, but when we got to Yarra Yering we felt relaxed and settled. The log fire helped, as did the panoramic view overlooking the valley and all its multi-coloured autumn glory. But we were there for the wines, and to chat with the man who made them.
Over the next hour and a bit we tasted a dozen or so of his YY wines, discussing them, the region and the season. I remember his distinguished manner, old-world dress, white hair, and beard, along with his road-map-like face. His eyes sparkled as he gave us fascinating insights into his wines, and the Yarra. When we finished, we boxed up our wine drove straight home, each of us knowing it was a tasting experience to be savoured, and would be somehow diluted if we went to another cellar. As we drove down to the road, I wondered if it would be my last visit. Sadly it would. I
